VLC, the little cone that plays anything

THE GIST

VLC, from the non-profit VideoLAN project, plays almost any file or stream and costs nothing. It opens a playlist link directly, so BritCast TV can be on a laptop or phone in under a minute. No channel grid, but for testing a log-in or a quick watch at a desk it is unbeatable.

  • VLC wants the M3U link, not Xtream Codes.
  • A bigger network cache cures most stutter.
  • Search the playlist rather than scrolling thousands of entries.

1. Open the stream

PC: the Media menu’s Open Network Stream. Mac: Open Network in the File menu. Paste, play.

2. Show the list

The playlist pane opens with Ctrl+L (Cmd+Shift+P on Apple machines); filter it with the search box.

3. Smooth it out

Under Tools, Preferences, switch to showing All settings and open Input / Codecs; set network caching to 3000 ms, then reopen VLC.

4. Make your own shortlist

Delete what you never watch from the playlist and save it as a new file; open that next time.

Does VLC show a programme guide?
Not as a grid. For that, use Smarters or TiviMate.
Is VLC safe to install?
From videolan.org or an official store, yes; steer clear of copycat download pages.
