THE GIST

Old British programmes live on in a handful of places: ITV3 and ITV4 for classic ITV drama and action series, the UKTV channels such as U&Gold and U&Drama for BBC comedy and detective shows, BBC Four for archive gems, and independent channels like Talking Pictures TV for vintage films. Schedules change constantly, so check listings rather than relying on any one channel.

  • ITV3 and ITV4 lean on ITV's own archive of drama and action.
  • UKTV's channels repeat a great deal of classic BBC comedy.
  • Talking Pictures TV specialises in old British films and series.

The main homes

  • ITV3 and ITV4. Classic ITV detective series, period drama, and 1970s and 80s action shows, with sport on ITV4.
  • U&Gold, U&Drama and U&Alibi. UKTV, owned by BBC Studios, repeats a huge amount of classic BBC comedy and crime.
  • BBC Four. Archive documentaries, vintage comedy and music programmes, as well as new commissions.
  • Talking Pictures TV. An independent channel showing old British films and series, many unseen on television for decades.

Finding a particular programme

  1. Look it up on our shows shelf for when it was made and where it began.
  2. Check the official streaming services; BBC iPlayer and ITVX hold more archive than they used to.
  3. Search the week’s listings on our airing this week pages.
  4. Failing that, DVD and Blu-ray box sets cover most well-loved series.

A note on lost episodes

The BBC and ITV wiped many tapes in the 1960s and 70s to reuse them. Fans have since recovered episodes from overseas broadcasters and home recordings, which is why a few Doctor Who and Dad’s Army episodes reappeared decades later.

People also ask

Why are some old shows never repeated?
Rights are complicated: music clearances, actors' contracts and, occasionally, content that has aged badly. Some episodes are simply lost; early Doctor Who is the famous example.
Are these channels free?
Most of them are on Freeview and free to watch, with a TV licence for live viewing.
